Hello,
I wanted to pass along the good news that the Garden has been awarded a 2 year grant by the Institute for a GIS mapping project currently underway. During this time, we will continue to map the plant collections, based on geographic regions, by verifying and recording the location of each plant in the collection.
We are looking for both interns and volunteers:
1. Motivated individuals who are interested in an internship position at the Garden for class credits. The internship has a time commitment of 16 hours per month. The internship will entail data collection in the field, as well as processing data and map production in the office. The ideal candidate will need a minimum of one semester of entry level GIS classes to qualify for the internship.
2. Volunteers to help with the data collection using mapping grade GPS and ESRI software. The volunteer position also requires a commitment of 16 hours per month minimum. If you are interested in field methods for data collection, developing plant identification skills and like working in a team environment this is the perfect opportunity. Plant knowledge is not a requirement, but can be helpful.
If you happen to know of any individuals who are interested in gaining experience using GIS/GPS or have an interest in horticulture please forward this along.
Regards,
GIS Manager
